Karl Lanier

I learned to weave while working towards a Fine Arts degree at Southern Illinois University. For the last 12 years I have been hand-weaving mostly with yarn that I have dyed myself. I have been interpreting the world as I see it by changing color, color combinations, and arrangements while using a plain weave structure. This last year I have been weaving patterns from 19th century coverlets with 21st century color voicings. This journey is an exciting one that is allowing me to breathe life back into weave patterns that were pushed aside by "progress" and the Industrial Revolution's commercial weaving. Many of these weaving patterns of old can only be seen in books or in museums. I am aiming to reintroduce these beautiful and exciting patterns to a larger audience. I hope that you will enjoy them as much as I do.

In weaving, I strive for excellence as well as a unique expressiveness. My work is influenced by my interest in modern art. Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol are examples of art masters whose ideas have inspired my style of woven craft. My products are distinctive in their intensity and variety of colors, and I achieve special color effects by hand-dying the yarn that I use in weaving. All hand-woven, my scarves, shawls, blankets, throws, totebags, and purses have a unique Karl Lanier look and feel. The color, texture, and pattern convey sophistication and vibrancy, elegance and fun.
